The usage of ไม่...แล้ว (mâi...láew) = Not Anymore
One of the most useful Thai phrases to express that something is no longer happening is "ไม่...แล้ว (mâi...láew)." It translates to "not anymore" or "no longer" in English.
How It Works
The structure is simple:
- ไม่ (mâi) = "not/no"
- [Verb/Adjective] = The action or state that has stopped
- แล้ว (láew) = Indicates completion or change
By placing "ไม่ mâi" before a verb or adjective and adding "แล้ว láew" at the end, you show that something used to happen but doesn’t anymore.
Examples
1. ไม่กินเนื้อสัตว์แล้ว (mâi gin néuua sàt láew)
= I don’t eat meat anymore.
2. เขาไม่สูบบุหรี่แล้ว (Kháo mâi sùup bù-rìi láew)
= He doesn’t smoke anymore.**
3. เธอไม่ทำงานที่นี่แล้ว (Ther mâi tham-ngaan thîi-nîi láew)
= She doesn’t work here anymore.
4. ฝนไม่ตกแล้ว (Fŏn mâi dtòk láew)
= It’s not raining anymore.
5. ไม่โกรธแล้ว (Chán mâi gròot láew)
= I’m not angry anymore.
Practice
Try making your own sentences using "ไม่...แล้ว mâi .... láew" with these verbs and adjectives:
- เรียน (rian) = to study
- หนาว (nǎao) = cold
- ใช้ (chái) = to use
- ชอบ (chôp) = to like
For example: ฉันไม่เรียนภาษาญี่ปุ่นแล้ว (Chán mâi rian paa-sǎa yîi-bpùn láew)
I don’t study Japanese anymore.
