Thai Listening Practice: Morning Routine

Thai Listening Practice: Morning Routine

By the time you reach upper intermediate Thai, single phrases stop being the problem. The real test is following a native speaker telling a story at natural speed. This listening exercise is exactly that: a short story, told 100% in Thai, about one ordinary morning, from waking up at seven to walking out the door.

The story runs through the vocabulary of an ordinary morning: waking up, washing your face, brushing your teeth, showering, and eating breakfast at home. Keep an ear out for natural phrases too, like yang ngûang yùu loei, still so sleepy. Play the video once without reading, then scroll down to the script, phonetics, and English translation to check how much you caught. If the full-speed story feels like a jump, warm up with the shorter 30-Second Thai episode on daily routine first.

English Translation

Today I woke up at seven in the morning, then washed my face and brushed my teeth before anything else.

After I finished showering, I felt refreshed and ready to start a new day.

I prefer eating breakfast at home rather than buying outside because it saves both time and money.

Today I had rice porridge and a Thai omelette for breakfast. I felt full and had a lot of energy.

Before leaving the house, I checked my phone and prepared the things I would need for the whole day.

Practice Tips

  • Listen once without the script and count how many routine verbs you catch: dtèun-norn, láang-nâa, bpraeng-fan, àap-náam.
  • On the second listen, follow the phonetics line by line to connect the sounds to the syllables.
  • Cover the English block, read the Thai script on its own, and translate each sentence before checking.
  • Then describe your own morning out loud, reusing prór-wâa (because) and gòn (before) to connect your sentences the way the story does.

Hearing full stories like this one is how you close the gap between textbook Thai and real conversation. If you want to practice telling your own routine out loud, with a native teacher correcting your tones as you go, that is exactly what my private Thai lessons are built for. And when this story starts to feel easy, there are plenty more listening exercises to keep you moving.
